I started testing out a ton of natural ethnic hair care products within the last couple of months. As a minority, I have found it difficult to navigate the world of hair due to a somewhat limited range of products that keep minorities in mind during development.

TPH

The TPH collection by Taraji P. Henson has been my number one go-to lately. The ‘Never Salty’ scalp scrub is my primary recommendation from the brand. I have had my ups and downs with products that hone in on scalp care but none with results this noticeable.

What I noticed with this product is that, instead of using salt, this product uses granules of sugar for maximum exfoliation. The TPH scrub has an ingredient list that includes peppermint oil, which gives you this really tingly feeling that can still be felt once you wash the product out. Overall, a very good product to treat and maintain your hair, starting at the roots.

The TPH ‘Honey Fresh’ shampoo and ‘Make It Rain’ conditioner also worked equally as well. The conditioner is perfect for getting the job done effectively and the shampoo does a very good job of cleansing hair without leaving it too dry. Although both were made with all hair types in mind, my hope is that somewhere down the line, TPH adds a shampoo/conditioner that specifically caters to kinker hair types. These are really great for households that have a mix of hair types or are attempting to lean more towards something universal.

Curls Dynasty

Curls Dynasty started out of entrepreneur Nickie Nougaisse’s kitchen in 2014 after developing her first product: the Organic Oil Blend. Since then, she's expanded the brand's offerings to a full range of natural hair products that will guide you effortlessly through your wash routine. The Cocoa Mint Moisture shampoo comes highly recommended from us for sure.

Adwoa Beauty

Founder Julian Addo saw a need for hair products that are effective on kinkier textures. The range she created includes two collections with the essentials to wash and style your hair. The ‘Baomint’ collection helps nourish the scalp using baobab, spearmint, peppermint, and wintergreen oils. The ‘Blue Tansy’ collection strengthens damaged hair using ingredients like: blue tansy flower oil, glycerin, and vitamin E.

Note From The Author

“I use Assume deep conditioner, Aussie deep conditioner, ‘As I Am’ leave-in conditioner, and organic coconut oil on my hair for my routine. I consider them all gold and have incorporated them into my wash routine.”

“I live by my current co-wash routine and tend to shampoo my hair less often (around once weekly/bi-weekly). I use the TPH ‘Never Salty’ scalp scrub, carrot oil, as well as Harry’s 2-in-1 shampoo & conditioner. Murray’s 100% organic Australian beeswax for my styling efforts.”
